Mallorca coast in October

Thinking about visiting Mallorca in October 2026?

You might have picked one of the most underrated months of the year to discover the island.

October marks the transition between Mallorca’s busy summer season and its quieter Mediterranean autumn. The beaches are noticeably less crowded, temperatures are generally still pleasant, the sea retains much of the warmth accumulated during summer, and Palma and Mallorca’s villages begin to feel more local again.

Discover the best things to do in Mallorca

It is also one of the most interesting months for travellers who want to combine beaches, sightseeing, hiking, food, local markets and traditional fairs rather than spending an entire holiday beside a swimming pool.

And 2026 has plenty happening around the island, from the traditional Fira d’Alcúdia at the beginning of the month to sporting events, food fairs and autumn celebrations.

In this complete local guide, we explain what Mallorca is really like in October, including the weather, what to pack, where to go, whether you can still swim, what is open and the best things to do in Mallorca in October 2026.

Quick answer: Yes, October can be an excellent time to visit Mallorca — particularly if you want pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds and don’t mind the possibility of occasional rain.

Mallorca in October 2026 – beaches, weather and things to do

Is October a Good Time to Visit Mallorca?

For many travellers, yes.

October sits in an interesting middle ground.

Mallorca is no longer experiencing the intense tourism levels of July and August, but the island has not yet entered its quietest winter period either.

You can still have warm, sunny days suitable for the beach, while temperatures are generally much more comfortable for walking around Palma, exploring villages or hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana.

Some of the biggest advantages of visiting Mallorca in October are:

  • fewer crowds at beaches and major attractions
  • more comfortable temperatures for sightseeing
  • excellent conditions for hiking and cycling
  • traditional autumn fairs and food festivals
  • easier parking in many tourist areas
  • a more relaxed atmosphere
  • opportunities to experience Mallorca beyond its beaches

There is one important trade-off.

October weather is less predictable than summer.

You may experience several beautiful sunny days in a row, but October is also part of Mallorca’s wetter autumn period. Short periods of heavy rain or thunderstorms are possible.

The best strategy is therefore not to plan your entire holiday around beaches.

Combine beach days with villages, Palma, markets, food experiences, hiking and cultural visits, and October becomes one of the most versatile months for exploring Mallorca.

Mallorca Weather in October 2026

Nobody can accurately predict the weather for the entire month of October weeks in advance.

What we can use are Mallorca’s official historical climate averages.

According to Spain’s national meteorological agency AEMET, the Palma Port weather station records an average October temperature of approximately 20.2°C, with average daily highs around 23.7°C and average lows around 16.6°C.

October historically receives around 69 mm of rainfall, spread across roughly seven days with measurable precipitation.

Palma also averages approximately 205 hours of sunshine during October.

That means October is certainly not winter in Mallorca.

On a sunny afternoon, temperatures can still feel very warm, particularly in sheltered areas and beaches. Once the sun disappears, however, evenings can become noticeably cooler.

Typical October conditions in Mallorca

ConditionTypical October figure
Average daytime highAround 24°C
Average night-time lowAround 16–17°C in Palma
Average monthly temperatureAround 20°C
Average rainfallAround 69 mm
Average sunshineAround 205 hours/month
Weather patternSun, clouds and occasional autumn rain

These are climate averages, not a forecast for October 2026.

Weather can also vary significantly around Mallorca. The mountainous Serra de Tramuntana, for example, can experience different conditions from Palma or the southeast coast.

Local tip: Don’t cancel your plans just because a weather app displays a rain symbol. Mediterranean autumn weather can be very localised. It may rain heavily in one part of Mallorca while another area remains dry.

Swimming in Mallorca in October

Can You Swim in Mallorca in October?

Yes — many people still swim in Mallorca in October.

The Mediterranean has spent the entire summer warming up, so sea temperatures decrease more slowly than air temperatures.

Early October generally offers the best chance of classic beach weather, but swimming can remain pleasant later in the month on warm, calm days.

Of course, everyone experiences water temperature differently.

Another important difference compared with July and August is beach supervision.

As the summer season ends, lifeguard coverage and beach services can become reduced or seasonal, depending on the municipality and beach.

Always check the beach flag and sea conditions before entering the water.

Best Beaches to Visit in Mallorca in October

October is one of our favourite periods for exploring Mallorca’s beaches.

Why?

Because some places that can feel extremely crowded in August become dramatically more enjoyable.

You can consider beaches and coves such as:

Playa de Muro

One of Mallorca’s longest sandy beaches and an excellent choice for families.

Its shallow turquoise water and long shoreline make it ideal for walking, relaxing and swimming when conditions are calm.

Cala Mondragó

Located inside Mondragó Natural Park, this is a particularly attractive option in autumn because you can combine the beach with coastal walking trails.

Cala Agulla

A beautiful sandy beach surrounded by pine-covered landscape near Cala Ratjada.

Cala Mesquida

Known for its natural setting, dunes and wide beach.

Formentor Beach

The scenery around the Formentor peninsula is spectacular outside peak summer.

Caló des Moro

One of Mallorca’s most famous coves.

October can make visiting significantly more pleasant than the busiest summer weeks, although access still requires walking and appropriate footwear.

Cala s’Almunia

Located beside Caló des Moro and worth combining during the same visit.

Best beaches in Mallorca in October

1. Explore Palma Without the Summer Crowds

October is an excellent month to discover Palma de Mallorca.

During July and August, walking through the historic centre in the middle of the afternoon can be exhausting.

October is completely different.

Spend a day wandering through:

  • Palma Cathedral
  • Parc de la Mar
  • the Old Town
  • the Jewish Quarter
  • Passeig del Born
  • La Lonja
  • Santa Catalina
  • the Arab Baths
  • the traditional shopping streets around the centre

Take time to look upwards while walking through Palma’s Old Town.

Behind many seemingly ordinary façades are historic Mallorcan patios, Gothic architecture and centuries of history.

October 2026 is particularly interesting culturally, with exhibitions, concerts and performances scheduled throughout the city.

Discover it all with a local guide on our Palma Old Town Walking Tour (1h15 to 1h30), or see all our Palma city tours.

Beautiful cathedral in Palma

2. Experience Fira d’Alcúdia – 2 to 4 October 2026

If you’re in northern Mallorca at the beginning of October, put this one in your calendar.

The Fira d’Alcúdia 2026 takes place from 2 to 4 October.

The traditional fair transforms Alcúdia’s historic centre for three days with culture, local traditions, commerce and activities.

Alcúdia itself is worth visiting even without the fair.

Walk through the medieval old town, explore the streets inside the historic walls and combine your visit with nearby Playa de Muro or Port d’Alcúdia.

2026 dates: 2–4 October.

3. Discover Mallorca’s Most Beautiful Villages

October is arguably better than summer for exploring Mallorca’s villages.

Temperatures are more comfortable and many villages feel considerably less congested.

Some of our favourites include:

Valldemossa

Probably Mallorca’s most famous mountain village.

Walk through its stone streets, visit the Charterhouse and try a traditional coca de patata.

Deià

A spectacular stone village between the mountains and Mediterranean Sea.

The surrounding scenery is among the most beautiful in Mallorca.

Sóller

Explore the historic centre, sit around Plaça de sa Constitució and combine the town with Port de Sóller.

Fornalutx

Frequently described as one of Spain’s most beautiful villages, Fornalutx is particularly enjoyable when summer crowds decrease.

Alcúdia

Its walled historic centre makes Alcúdia completely different from Mallorca’s coastal resorts.

Pollença

Walk through its historic centre and climb the famous Calvari Steps for views over the town.

4. Visit the Serra de Tramuntana

October marks the return of one of Mallorca’s greatest activities:

hiking.

The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range runs along Mallorca’s northwest coast and has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage cultural landscape.

Summer temperatures can make hiking uncomfortable or even dangerous during the hottest hours.

October usually offers much more suitable temperatures.

Popular areas include:

  • Sóller
  • Deià
  • Valldemossa
  • Lluc
  • Cúber Reservoir
  • Pollença
  • the GR221 Dry Stone Route

Always check the weather before heading into the mountains.

Heavy autumn rain can quickly change trail conditions.

5. Experience the Fira de la Llampuga in Cala Ratjada

October is also food-festival season in Mallorca.

One of the most distinctive events is the Fira de la Llampuga in Cala Ratjada.

Llampuga — known in English as common dolphinfish or mahi-mahi — traditionally arrives in Mallorcan waters around the end of summer.

During the fair, local fishermen, restaurants and chefs celebrate the seasonal fish through numerous dishes, including tapas, fideuà, croquettes and other creative preparations.

The event traditionally takes place on the second weekend of October.

Combine it with a visit to Cala Ratjada and nearby Capdepera Castle.

This is exactly the kind of local event that allows visitors to experience a completely different side of Mallorca from the traditional beach resorts.

6. Visit Mallorca’s Local Markets

Markets remain part of everyday Mallorcan life long after the summer holiday season slows down.

Some popular weekly markets include:

Monday: Manacor
Tuesday: Alcúdia
Wednesday: Sineu
Thursday: Inca
Friday: Son Servera
Saturday: Sóller and Santanyí
Sunday: Pollença

Sineu is particularly interesting if you’re looking for a traditional inland market experience.

Santanyí can easily be combined with the southeast coast, while Pollença makes an excellent Sunday morning destination.

Tip: Go early. Most traditional markets are morning markets and begin packing up around lunchtime.

7. Discover Mallorca’s Autumn Fairs in Inca

One of the clearest signs that Mallorca is entering autumn is the beginning of Inca’s traditional fair season.

For 2026, the official calendar includes:

24–25 October — Fira de la Terra

and

31 October–1 November — Fira de l’Esport i l’Oci

These fairs form part of the build-up to Dijous Bo, one of Mallorca’s biggest traditional fairs, which takes place later in November.

If you’re staying in Mallorca during the second half of October, visiting Inca gives you an opportunity to experience the island beyond the coast and tourist resorts.

8. Take a Boat Trip While the Season Is Still Running

October doesn’t automatically mean the end of boat season.

Weather permitting, several boat experiences continue operating, particularly during the earlier part of the month.

And there is a major advantage:

the coastline is much quieter than in August.

Depending on where you’re staying, options include exploring caves, secluded coves and some of Mallorca’s most dramatic stretches of coastline.

On Palma Tour Mallorca, you can discover experiences including:

Blue Cave Boat Tour

Explore Mallorca’s coastline and discover spectacular caves and Mediterranean scenery.

Caló des Moro & Cala s’Almunia Boat Tour

Discover two of southeast Mallorca’s most famous coves from the sea.

Cala Figuera to Cala Màrmols

A beautiful boat trip towards one of the island’s more isolated coves.

Coll Baix Snorkelling Boat Tour

Explore the spectacular northern coastline around Alcúdia.

Dolphin Watching at Sunrise from Alcúdia

Watch wild dolphins off Cap de Formentor on a calm autumn morning.

Family Boat Trip from Magaluf

Swimming stops and a buffet on board, ideal with children.

Because October schedules depend more heavily on sea and weather conditions, always check availability for your exact travel dates.

9. Try Scuba Diving in Mallorca

The Mediterranean remains relatively warm after summer, making early autumn an interesting period for diving.

If you’ve never tried scuba diving before, you don’t necessarily need previous experience.

Our Beginner Scuba Diving experience in Porto Cristo is designed as an introduction to diving and allows beginners to discover Mallorca underwater with professional supervision.

Porto Cristo also makes an excellent day trip when combined with Mallorca’s east coast.

10. Go Cycling

October is one of Mallorca’s major cycling periods.

Once the intense summer heat disappears, cyclists return to the island’s roads.

Mallorca offers everything from flat routes across the centre of the island to demanding climbs through the Serra de Tramuntana.

Famous cycling routes include:

  • Sa Calobra
  • Cap de Formentor
  • Coll de Sóller
  • Orient
  • Lluc
  • Puig Major

Drivers should also be particularly attentive during cycling season and leave sufficient distance when overtaking.

11. Watch the Palma Marathon – 18 October 2026

One of Palma’s biggest sporting dates this October is the Palma Marathon Mallorca.

The 2026 edition takes place on:

Sunday, 18 October 2026

The event includes:

  • Marathon
  • Half Marathon
  • 10 km

The races begin around the spectacular Parc de la Mar, beside Palma Cathedral.

Even if you’re not running, the event creates a special atmosphere around Palma.

If you’re staying in the city that weekend, however, expect road closures and transport changes around parts of the race route.

12. Experience Challenge Mallorca in Peguera

Sports fans have another major event in October.

Challenge Mallorca takes place in Peguera, in southwest Mallorca, with activities scheduled between 14 and 18 October 2026.

The main middle-distance triathlon takes place on Saturday, 17 October.

The programme extends beyond the race itself, with an expo, activities and events around Peguera.

It’s particularly worth knowing about if you’re staying around Peguera, Santa Ponsa, Camp de Mar or southwest Mallorca during those dates.

13. Enjoy Mallorca’s Food Without Peak-Season Crowds

October is an excellent month to slow down and explore Mallorcan cuisine.

Look for traditional dishes and products such as:

Pa amb oli — Mallorcan bread with olive oil and toppings.

Sobrasada — Mallorca’s famous cured sausage.

Tumbet — layers of vegetables including potato, aubergine and red pepper.

Frito mallorquín — one of Mallorca’s classic traditional dishes.

Ensaimada — the island’s iconic spiral-shaped pastry.

Almond products — Mallorca has a long tradition of almond cultivation.

And autumn brings another Mallorcan favourite:

buñuelos, or bunyols in Catalan.

These small fried pastries are traditionally associated with autumn and are particularly popular around the period of Les Verges, celebrated in October.

Want to taste it all with a local? Join our Palma Tapas Tour, a 2h30 evening food experience, or our market tour with Mallorcan wine, ham and cheese.

14. Visit Palma’s Museums and Cultural Attractions

What happens if it rains?

Don’t worry.

A rainy morning doesn’t have to ruin a Mallorca holiday.

Palma offers several indoor attractions including:

  • Es Baluard Museu
  • Fundació Miró Mallorca
  • CaixaForum Palma
  • Palma Cathedral
  • Palau March
  • historic churches and cultural spaces

In 2026, Palma’s cultural calendar continues well into autumn, with exhibitions, guided visits, music and performances scheduled throughout October.

This makes Palma particularly useful as a flexible option when the weather isn’t suitable for the beach.

Skip the queues with a Palma Cathedral ticket, the Cathedral + Miró combo, or browse all our tickets and attractions in Palma.

15. Discover Fira B! in Palma

If you’re in Palma right at the beginning of October, there’s another cultural event worth knowing about.

The 2026 edition of Fira B!, the Balearic Islands’ professional performing arts and music showcase, begins with its performing-arts programme from 30 September to 3 October.

Around thirty theatre, dance and contemporary performance productions are expected across venues including Teatre Principal, Es Baluard, Ses Voltes and other cultural spaces around Palma.

It’s a very different experience from Mallorca’s traditional tourist attractions and another good example of why visiting outside peak summer can be rewarding.

16. Visit Mallorca’s Caves

Caves are one of the easiest activities to plan regardless of the weather.

Mallorca has several spectacular cave systems.

The most famous are the Caves of Drach near Porto Cristo, known for their enormous underground chambers and Lake Martel.

Other options include:

  • Coves dels Hams
  • Coves d’Artà
  • Coves de Campanet
  • Coves de Génova

They are particularly useful to keep in your itinerary as a backup plan for a cloudy or rainy day.

Book ahead: Caves of Drach tickets, Caves dels Hams tickets, or the Genova Caves skip-the-line ticket, just outside Palma.

17. Take a Road Trip Through Northwest Mallorca

If you rent a car, one of our favourite October itineraries is a road trip through the Serra de Tramuntana.

For example:

Palma → Valldemossa → Deià → Sóller → Port de Sóller

Don’t rush it.

The point isn’t to collect villages as quickly as possible.

Stop for coffee, walk through the old streets, find a viewpoint and enjoy the drive.

In October, this route is generally much more pleasant than during the height of summer.

18. Watch a Mediterranean Sunset

As sunset gets earlier, you no longer have to wait until late in the evening to enjoy one of Mallorca’s spectacular sunsets.

Good areas include:

  • west coast viewpoints
  • Port de Sóller
  • Deià
  • Sant Elm
  • southwest Mallorca
  • Palma’s waterfront

Bring a light jacket if you’re staying after sunset.

What Is Open in Mallorca in October?

This is one of the most common questions we receive.

Mallorca does not close on 1 October.

Palma remains active throughout the year, as do larger towns such as Inca, Manacor, Sóller, Alcúdia and Pollença.

Many hotels, restaurants, excursions and tourist businesses in coastal resorts also continue operating during October.

However, October is a transition month.

Some seasonal businesses begin reducing their hours or closing towards the end of the month, particularly in resorts that depend heavily on summer tourism.

If a specific beach club, restaurant, boat trip or attraction is essential to your holiday, check its opening schedule directly before travelling.

Is Mallorca Busy in October?

Compared with July and August, generally much less so.

Popular places such as Valldemossa, Sóller, Palma and famous beaches can still attract plenty of visitors, especially on sunny weekends.

But overall, the island feels considerably more relaxed.

That difference is particularly noticeable at:

  • beaches
  • parking areas
  • restaurants
  • mountain villages
  • viewpoints
  • coastal roads

This is one of October’s biggest advantages.

What to Pack for Mallorca in October

Packing for Mallorca in October requires more variety than packing for August.

Bring clothes for warm afternoons and cooler evenings.

We recommend:

  • T-shirts
  • shorts
  • lightweight trousers
  • swimwear
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • trainers or hiking shoes
  • a light jumper
  • a light jacket
  • compact waterproof jacket
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • small umbrella
  • reusable water bottle

If you’re planning mountain walks, bring proper footwear rather than relying on beach sandals.

Do You Need a Car in Mallorca in October?

Not necessarily.

If you’re staying in Palma and mainly want to explore the city, you can easily manage without one.

Mallorca has a network of intercity buses, trains and local Palma buses.

Public transport connects many popular destinations, including Sóller, Inca, Alcúdia and other towns.

However, renting a car gives you considerably more freedom if you want to explore remote coves, mountain areas and several villages in the same day.

October also makes driving easier than peak summer because many areas have less traffic and parking pressure.

Mallorca in Early October vs Late October

There can be a noticeable difference.

Early October

Early October usually feels closer to the end of summer.

It generally offers the best combination for travellers wanting:

  • beaches
  • swimming
  • boat trips
  • restaurants
  • sightseeing

More seasonal businesses are also likely to still be operating.

Late October

By late October, Mallorca begins feeling more autumnal.

Days are shorter, evenings cooler and more seasonal tourism businesses may have closed.

But this period is particularly good for:

  • hiking
  • cycling
  • Palma
  • villages
  • markets
  • local fairs
  • gastronomy
  • cultural visits

Late October can therefore be better for travellers who want to explore Mallorca rather than simply have a beach holiday.

Mallorca in October With Children

October can work particularly well for families.

Without the extreme summer heat, visiting villages, attractions and outdoor sites becomes easier with children.

Good family options include:

  • Palma Aquarium
  • caves
  • beaches on warm days
  • Alcúdia Old Town
  • Palma
  • easy coastal walks
  • markets
  • boat trips when operating
  • Sóller and its historic train/tram experience, for example this vintage train and boat tour

Just remember that swimming pools at hotels may feel cooler than the sea unless they are heated.

What Happens on 12 October in Mallorca?

12 October is Spain’s National Day and a public holiday.

Some shops, businesses and public services may operate on reduced schedules or close.

Restaurants and tourism-related businesses may remain open, particularly in popular areas, but don’t assume normal Monday-to-Saturday opening hours.

Plan essential shopping accordingly.

Is Mallorca Worth Visiting in October?

If your idea of Mallorca is exclusively guaranteed hot weather and spending seven consecutive days on a beach, July or August offers more predictable conditions.

But if you want to actually discover the island, October has a lot going for it.

You can have breakfast in Palma, walk through Valldemossa, hike in the Tramuntana, visit a local fair, eat beside the Mediterranean and — if the weather cooperates — still finish the day swimming in turquoise water.

And you can do much of it without the intense crowds and heat of peak summer.

That’s why October remains one of our favourite periods for travellers who want to experience more than Mallorca’s resorts.
